Course Description:  This semester course is designed to create an awareness of career possibilities in health care and inform students of the educational options available for health science and health technology programs.  Instruction includes beginning anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical ethics, diseases, and disorders. The course prepares students for the Medical Anatomy & Physiology course and/or for a variety of health technology programs.

Class Expectations:  Be Responsible, Be Respectful!

 

Grading Policy:  Students grades will be based on tests, assignments, projects, presentations, quizzes and daily warm-up activities.  I will try to balance the amount of points awarded by tests and other types of assignments.  There will be opportunities for extra credit as they arise. 

The Grading scale is as follows:

 

 

93-100% A              90-92%- A-

87-89%- B+            83-86%- B            80-82%- B-

77-79%- C+            73-76%- C            70-72%- C-

67-69%- D              63-66%- D            60-62%- D-      

59% or lower- F

 

Cheating:  Do not cheat!  It is wrong and against school policy.  If you are caught cheating on an assignment or test your paper will be immediately discarded and no points will be awarded for that assignment for all parties involved.  Additional consequences may also be necessary.

 

 

Make-up work:  Only work missed during a VALID excused absence may be made up, there is no make up for unexcused absences.  When you miss class YOU are responsible for checking the class website to see what you have missed and completing and turning in the make-up work to the make-up bin.  You have 2 class days for every day missed to turn in the assignment.

 

Late Work:  All late work will be worth half credit.  Late work will only be accepted up to 2 weeks after it is due unless otherwise noted. 

 

Electronic Devices:  Electronic devices such as cell phones, I-pods, etc. or any other device that causes a distraction are not allowed in class.  If you are seen with one of these things you may receive one verbal warning.  On the second offense it will be confiscated and turned into the office.  On occasion we may use some of these devices for educational purposes, but only when given permission, and can only be used for the purpose intended.

 

Behavior Issues:  Students with behavioral problems will be subject to the following steps of intervention:

            First offense: Student/Teacher conference (documented)

            Second offense: Parent/Teacher conference (documented)

            Third offense:  Administration intervention recommended

 

FERPA:  FERPA, or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, protects students educational records.  On occasion, students may be asked to grade each other’s work in class.  If you do not feel comfortable with another student grading your student’s assignment, please let me know and other arrangements can be made.

 

Human Sexuality Consent form:    As required by the state of Utah, in this class we will be discussing items related to human sexuality and reproduction.  In order for students to participate in this unit, parents must sign a consent form.  Consent forms will be sent out at least two weeks prior to our covering of that unit.

 

HOSA: Health Occupations Students of America or HOSA is a student lead organization for students with interests in pursuing careers in the health and medical field.  This organization gives students opportunities for hands on learning, career exploration, to build résumés and obtain scholarships.  We will be doing several activities in this class that correlate strongly with HOSA.  I encourage all students enrolled in this class to join the HOSA organization to further their health science education and opportunities.  Dues for this organization are $15 to be paid in the finance office.
