Course Description

Students will gain an understanding of the marketing and management principles necessary to start and operate their own business. They will develop an awareness of the opportunities for small business ownership and develop the planning skills needed to open a small business. Students will become aware of the traits and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Students will gain an awareness of knowledge needed in research, planning and regulations affecting the small business and the means of financing a small business. They will understand the specific strategies of business management and marketing and the economic role of the entrepreneur in the market system. Entrepreneurship is designed for students enrolled in business and marketing education, and/or other courses, who have an interest in developing the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for successful entrepreneurs.

Course Strands

  1. Students will identify the role and characteristics of an entrepreneur. Students will examine the benefits and risks of entrepreneurship activity to the economy.
  2. Students will identify problems and create solutions in order to address consumers’ needs/wants.
  3. Students will understand how economic concepts affect decision making in an entrepreneurial venture.
  4. Students will understand how marketing affects an entrepreneurial venture.
  5. Students will understand financial concepts and tools used by entrepreneurs in making business and personal decisions.
  6. Students will understand the role of management principles in an entrepreneurial venture.
  7. Students will analyze how forms of business ownership, government regulations, and legal regulations affect entrepreneurial ventures.


Skill Certification

In order to receive skill certification in this course, students must complete the following:

  1. Achieve an 80% or higher on each performance objective
  2. Pass the online state assessment test at or above 80%

 

Grading and Assessment

  • Students’ grades will be determined from a total point system. Points are accumulated from a variety of activities, tests, quizzes, presentations, homework, and collaboration.  
  • Students will receive 5 participation points for each class day. Students will be penalized 2 points for being tardy and the full 5 points for an unexcused absence or for not participating in classroom activities according to the approved academic participation principles. Points lost for unexcused absences and participation CAN NOT be made up. 
  • Participation points will be added at midterm and at the end of the course (50 points each)  
  • All late work will be assigned ½ credit of the assigned points (students have 5 school days to complete)
  • Any cheating or copying of other students’ work will receive a ZERO

 

 Makeup Work

After any absence, a secondary student is required to initiate contact with the teacher(s) to obtain appropriate makeup work within three school days immediately following the absence. The makeup work must be returned to the instructor by the specified due date if it is to be acknowledged. Any assignment given with a due date with a week advance notice is due on or before that date without exception.  Late projects WILL NOT be accepted.  

Presentations days missed will receive a zero in the grade book.

No late work will be accepted after midterm, end of quarter, or posted date in class.

 

Cell Phone/Electronic Policy

​According to Washington County District policy, cell phones and electronic equipment will not be allowed during class time. “Any electronic device found on District property is subject to search and confiscation.” If there is an emergency, please have your parent/guardian contact the front office

 

Governor’s and the Southwest Public Health Department orders and guidelines

Mr. Burton’s classes will be following the Schools Guide and WCSD School Reopening Requirements and Assurances found on the school district website. This includes, but not limited to: 

  1. Wearing a face covering approved by WCSD
  2. Sitting in an assigned seat and remaining seated as much as possible
  3. Using the same assigned Chromebook
