Class Expectations: Be Responsible, Be Respectful!
Grading Policy: Students grades will be based on tests, assignments, projects, presentations, quizzes and daily warm-up activities. I will try to balance the amount of points awarded by tests and other types of assignments. There will be opportunities for extra credit as they arise.
The Grading scale is as follows:
93-100% A 90-92%- A-
87-89%- B+ 83-86%- B 80-82%- B-
77-79%- C+ 73-76%- C 70-72%- C-
67-69%- D 63-66%- D 60-62%- D-
59% or lower- F
Cheating: Do not cheat! It is wrong and against school policy. If you are caught cheating on an assignment or test your paper will be immediately discarded and no points will be awarded for that assignment for all parties involved. Additional consequences may also be necessary.
Attendance: If a student accumulates a total of 7 or more attendance points during a term in any class period, the grade and credit for that class will be changed to a NG ( No Grade) until the student has completed the required restitution. The student has the quarter that the NG is earned and the following quarter to complete the required restitution. Attendance codes are as follows:
E= Excused absence ……………………………………………………………… 2 points
An absence excused by a parent up to 2 days following the absence.
S= Truancy ……………………………………………………………………… 7 points
Students who are not in their appropriate class at the scheduled time are guilty of truancy unless permission has been received from the teacher. All truancies require immediate restitution of 2 hours and cannot be excused by parent or guardian.
T= Tardy…………………………………………………………………………… 1 point
Any student arriving un-excused to class after the assigned start time and up to 20 minutes late. (After 20 minutes student will be marked absent)
X= Unexcused Absence ………………………………………………………….. 2 points
Any absence not excused in accordance with the definition for an excused absence.
A= Activity Absence ……………………………………………………………. 0 points
Absence due to involvement in a school sponsored activity.
V= Educational Travel ………………………………………………………….. 0 points
Travel with family or others. Requires prior notification and approval.
H= Homebound …………………………………………………………………. 0 points
Illness or injury which causes absence in excess of five consecutive days.
Tardy Policy: When you are tardy you will miss the warm up activity which cannot be made up. You will miss the points for that day. When you come in tardy sign in on the tardy sheet. Because I take roll at the beginning of class if you are not on time you will be marked absent. The only way your absence will be changed to a tardy is if you sign the sheet.
Make-up work: Only work missed during a VALID excused absence may be made up, there is no make up for unexcused absences. When you miss class YOU are responsible for checking the class website to see what you have missed and completing and turning in the make-up work to the make-up bin. You have 2 class days for every day missed to turn in the assignment.
Late Work: All late work will be worth half credit. Late work will only be accepted up to 2 weeks after it is due unless otherwise noted.
Electronic Devices: Electronic devices such as cell phones, I-pods, etc. or any other device that causes a distraction are not allowed in class. If you are seen with one of these things you may receive one verbal warning. On the second offense it will be confiscated and turned into the office. On occasion we may use some of these devices for educational purposes, but only when given permission, and can only be used for the purpose intended.
Behavior Issues: Students with behavioral problems will be subject to the following steps of intervention:
First offense: Student/Teacher conference (documented)
Second offense: Parent/Teacher conference (documented)
Third offense: Administration intervention recommended
FERPA: FERPA, or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, protects students educational records. On occasion, students may be asked to grade each other’s work in class. If you do not feel comfortable with another student grading your student’s assignment, please let me know and other arrangements can be made.
Human Sexuality Consent form: As required by the state of Utah, in this class we will be discussing items related to human sexuality and reproduction. In order for students to participate in this unit, parents must sign a consent form. Consent forms will be sent out at least two weeks prior to our covering of that unit.
HOSA: Health Occupations Students of America or HOSA is a student lead organization for students with interests in pursuing careers in the health and medical field. This organization gives students opportunities for hands on learning, career exploration, to build résumés and obtain scholarships. We will be doing several activities in this class that correlate strongly with HOSA. I encourage all students enrolled in this class to join the HOSA organization to further their health science education and opportunities. Dues for this organization are $15 to be paid in the finance office.
