This is a great activity for introducing and developing some academic vocabulary as well as some friendly class competition.

Additionally, this activity helps with reading fluency along with speaking and listening skills.

Here is the basic premise:

1. Every card has a vocabulary word on it.

2. Every card also has a question that includes the definition of a different vocabulary word.

3. Student one reads their question -- whichever student has the card with the answer to the question, stands up and reads the answer, and then reads their question. This continues until all cards have been read.

Example:

Student 1: "Who has the word that means the dramatic play of two differing, possibly even opposing ideas?"

Student 2: "I have counterpoint. Who has the word that means intentional exaggeration for comedic effect?"

Student 3: "I have hyperbole. Who has... etc."

4. I utilize the following rules:

Every reader must stand-up to read.

The students must allow every reader to read their ENTIRE card before moving on to the next card.

The students can help each other if they don't know their word or definition (this keeps all the students engaged even after they have read their own card).

I often give students multiple cards.

I let the students rehearse reading their card out loud before we start the round.

The classes compete against each other for some sort of prize -- I've learned that posting their times dramatically increases their engagement and excitement for the game.

5. As the students are reading their cards, I follow along on my key to make sure they are not skipping any -- I sometimes give clues if they get stuck.

6. This game can be used with vocabulary -- math questions -- historical figures -- really anything information that students need to internalize.

7. Here is a template that you all may use -- just make a copy of it and replace the words and questions with whatever is more pertinent to you.
